About the Academy

Welcome to the Cerro Coso Law Enforcement Academy webpage. We serve from Mammoth Lakes to Bakersfield, CA. Currently we offer POST certified modular police academy, an academic Transfer Degree, and full time intensive POST Police and STC Detentions academies in partnership with the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

All programs earn college credit and can be applied toward a degree.

Students and recruits who complete programs at our academy will be eligible to apply for a variety of law enforcement careers such as a police officer, deputy, reserve, probation or parole officer, and more.

Step 1: Apply to be a Cerro Coso student.

Step 2: Register for ADMJ C140, C142, or C143 (or other applicable course).

Step 3: Academy student packet will follow registration.

Financial Aid, GI Bill, and Promise Grant (free tuition) may be possible.

What Do I Need? What Is Provided?

Needed

  • Firearm: Personal semiautomatic handgun (preferably Glock 17, 22, 31).
    Academy provided holster fits the aforementioned handguns. Approximate cost $300 - $700 and three ten round magazines are needed. If you purchase or own a different firearm, it must be of patrol quality and you will be responsible for purchasing your own holster. Additionally, you will need to purchase a training (i.e. blue) gun that matches your firearm.

Provided

  • Ballistic vest, patrol bag, duty belt, holster, and all required duty gear (training gun, training taser, etc.), gas mask, ammunition, flash light, baton, range dues, and free electronic textbooks.
  • We make every effort to cover out of pocket expenses and provide over $5,000 worth of equipment and supplies to each recruit.
