Emergency Evacuation: Your Guide to Campus Safety

At Cerro Coso Community College, your safety is our top priority. Knowing what to do in an emergency is crucial, and this guide provides the simple, effective steps you should take if an evacuation is needed. Our approach is designed to be flexible and adaptable, ensuring everyone knows how to stay safe in any situation.

If an Evacuation Happens: What to Do

Whether it’s a fire alarm, an alert on your phone, or information from college staff, if you’re told to evacuate, here’s what you need to do immediately:

  1. Respond Quickly: As soon as you hear an alarm or receive an alert (Emergency Notification System), react right away and calmly. Don’t wait for more instructions inside the building.
  2. Head to a Designated Evacuation Point: Everyone must move to one of our designated outdoor assembly points. These are safe areas away from campus buildings. Find the one closest to your location:
    • North Evacuation Point: If you’re in the LRC, Industrial Arts/Art wing, or the northern parts of the Main Building, head to the open area north of the Main Building.
    • South Evacuation Point: If you’re in the Child Development Center (CDC), or the southern parts of the Main Building or East Wing, go to the open area south of the Main Building.
    • Gym Evacuation Point: If you’re in the Gym building, evacuate to the parking lot north of the Gym.
    • Outdoor Athletic Complex Evacuation Point: If you’re at the athletic complex, head to the parking lot north of the complex building.
  3. Wait for More Information: Once you reach your evacuation point, stay put and listen carefully for further instructions. College officials or emergency responders will provide updates and next steps. Do not re-enter any building until an “all clear” is officially announced.

What to Expect at Evacuation Points

When you arrive at an evacuation point, you’ll see other students, faculty, and staff. College personnel (like managers and designated safety staff) will be there to help organize the group. They will:

  • Take Charge: Someone will step forward to lead the group, gather information, and identify staff with radios.
  • Communicate: Staff with radios will send out immediate updates about the event and our location to central command.
  • Have Emergency Supplies: Each evacuation point has a container with basic first-aid supplies. Staff will access these if needed.
  • Be Accountable: College staff will use a simple form to account for spaces and areas, not individual people. This helps us to quickly understand what areas have been cleared.

Our Philosophy in Action

These steps put our core emergency philosophy into practice: Get Out, Gather in Defined Locations, Communicate Status with Radio Holders (our staff will do this), and Stand By for Guidance. By following these simple principles, you play a vital role in keeping yourself and our entire campus community safe during an emergency.

DO NOT LEAVE the scene.  The college may need to identify those involved in the event of a real emergency.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation with these important safety procedures.

Evacuation Maps

Cerro Coso Community College is committed to establishing and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for all employees and students.

The purpose of these evacuation maps is to provide a reasonable and organized method of evacuating college-operated facilities in the event of a fire or other emergency. These maps show the locations of building exits and the pathways of travel to those exits.

You should become familiar with the exit routes for any building you frequent. During an emergency, use these maps to move to the closest Evacuation Assembly Area on campus.
