Cerro Coso Community College Celebrates First CDL Graduate

Cerro Coso Community College proudly celebrates Gavin Hopkins, the first student to complete the college’s new Commercial Driver License (CDL) program, earning his Class A Driver’s License on February 25, 2026. Hopkins successfully passed his licensure examination on his first attempt after completing the college’s two-course non-credit training series.
The program is designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the high-demand trucking industry through comprehensive instruction that combines classroom theory and hands-on driving experience. Courses are led by experienced industry professionals: Mr. David Thomas, who teaches the Online Theory and Permit Preparation course, and Mr. Bikramjit Pannu, who provides behind-the-wheel training and road preparation. Together, they guide students through every step of the process from permit preparation to licensure testing.
“Gavin’s success demonstrates what is possible when accessible education is paired with workforce-aligned training,” said Nicole Griffin, Dean of Career Technical Education. “We are incredibly proud of his accomplishment and excited to see him launch his career.”
Hopkins shared his enthusiasm about the experience and what lies ahead. “I’m very proud of the opportunity that was given to me, the program has great direction for the future,” he said. “I’d definitely encourage anybody who enjoys driving to take on the challenge and responsibility of driving a big rig. I want to thank all of my instructors and the administrators for the opportunity. I look forward to using my CDL to get involved in contractor work and hopefully have a business of my own someday.”
Cerro Coso’s CDL program is offered as a non-credit, no-cost workforce training opportunity, removing financial barriers for students seeking short-term vocational training that leads directly to employment. The program was created to help meet the region’s strong demand for licensed commercial drivers while providing local residents with a pathway to stable, well-paying careers.
Hopkins’ achievement marks an important milestone for the college and highlights the effectiveness of Cerro Coso’s commitment to expanding access through noncredit programming.
The college plans to run this CDL series again, starting in April. The first course in the CDL series, Theory and Permit Preparation, will be offered in a 7-week hybrid format that combines Zoom sessions with online coursework. Open enrollment is expected to begin in March.
