It was a cold and rainy night last Friday, but inside Cerro Coso’s Art Gallery the vibe was warm.

“We’re not going to say the other ‘w’ word,” joked California artist Gina Herrera before launching into a riveting account of her life history and artistic process and how the two have woven together to make her a mixed-media artist to watch. (The “w” word not to be spoken is “wind” for anyone unfamiliar with this quaint desert superstition.)

Herrera’s artist talk was both humorous and moving as she shared her journey and how she is inspired not only by her military experience and personal heritage but also by the enduring influence of her father - whose strength and compassion continue to guide her artistic vision.

“I know he’s always with me all the time,” Gina said.

Herrera’s talk about transformation, resilience and finding beauty in what is broken sparked a lengthy question and answer period that enabled those attending to view her intriguing sculptures with even greater appreciation.

“Gina’s art invites us to reflect on humanities’ relationship with the natural world and the beauty that can emerge from struggle and renewal,” said President Sean Hancock, after thanking Art Professor Tanner McGuire for making possible the exhibition and opening.

The event encapsulated Cerro Coso’s mission of hosting artistic and cultural events that inspire creativity and engender community spirit.

A key component of CC’s role as a cultural hub is behind-the-scenes support from the Cerro Coso Foundation.

The Cerro Coso Community College Foundation relies on partnerships with community and corporate leaders who share a commitment to ensuring that students have access to an affordable, quality college education.

Contributing to this mission is the President’s Circle, a group of supporters who not only contribute financially but help carry the torch of cultural engagement. The President's Circle offers an opportunity to join a select group whose annual support of $1,000 or more makes a crucial difference to students.

At a recent President’s Circle social, nearly 30 current and potential members gathered in member Mary Lundstrom’s yard to hear from Hancock and McGuire about the art department and Herrera’s upcoming exhibition while it was in the planning stages. The guests mingled and enjoyed the evening on the patio which was the perfect backdrop for the presentation as Mary's yard and home are full of unique and eclectic works of art.

Foundation members went on to volunteer at or attend the event, bringing their support of the arts full circle.
