TRiO Services

TRIO receives its funds from the federal government, under the Student Support Services grant. The goal is to assist students to remain in college and graduate, as well as to transfer to a 4-year institution. TRiO serves approximately 160 students at the Indian Wells Valley and Kern River Valley campuses combined. TRIO offers a number of services created to increase students’ leadership and study skills, as well as to strengthen their college survival techniques, all essential in order to be a successful college student. These services are also designed to empower students to overcome the obstacles they may face at a higher learning institution and not become discouraged or overwhelmed by the system. In many instances, TRIO undertakes the primary role in helping students overcome class, social, academic and cultural barriers.

  • Cultural Enrichment Activities
Students are exposed to a number of different events, such as lectures and trips-all designed to enrich and teach our students about cultural diversity.

  • Educational Workshops
Workshops are developed to assist students in such areas as time management, study skills and college survival skills, etc.

  • Campus Visits to UC/CSUs
Students have the unique opportunity to visit a number of campuses so they can observe first hand what “college-life” truly entails when they transfer to a 4-year institution.

  • Financial Aid & Scholarship Resources
Counselors work closely with students in exploring all the financial aid resources. Assistance is provided with the FAFSA application, as well as with scholarship information and research.

  • Tutoring
Tutoring is provided either on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting by tutors who are well trained and are familiar with the expectations of the instructors. Tutoring is available in many subjects.

  • Personalized Academic and Career Counseling
Counselor will assist students in completing their Education Study Plan, as well as in exploring career options.

  • Transfer Assistance
Students are provided with vital information regarding the transfer process, as well as assistance with completing the CSU/UC transfer application.

  • Honor Grant
TRIO students have a terrific opportunity to apply for the TRIO Honor Grant. This financial assistance can be used to meet any educational expenses the student may have.
