What are the requirements to join TRIO?
You must either be First-Generation (neither parent has obtained their bachelor’s degree), Low-Income (according to federal guidelines) and/or have a verified learning or physical disability. In addition, a student must meet all of the following criteria: be a U.S. citizen or Legal Resident (must qualify for federal aid), have a FAFSA on file, have academic need and either be attending CCC on a part or full-time basis and working towards a degree or transferring to a 4 year college.

Top

How do I apply?
Students can either pick up an application at the TRIO office, download the TRIO application from our website, or contact the TRiO program and request an application be mailed to them.

Top

How will I know if I am accepted into TRIO?
Within one week of submitting the application, a letter will be mailed to the student’s home address informing the student if they have been accepted.

Top

What if I am not accepted into the program?
If the letter you receive states you have not been accepted, the best thing to do is to either call or come by the office to find out specifically why you were denied. It is possible you need to submit additional information in order to have this status changed.

Top

Do I have to provide income verification, like copies of my parent’s taxes?
No. We simply ask you to indicate on the application the range of your family’s income. Your signature serves as verification.

Top

What is the TRIO Honor Grant?
The Honor grant is only awarded to TRIO students who meet certain criteria for the Fall and Spring semesters. It can be used to pay for any educational expenses.

Top

What are the requirements for the Honor Grant?
In order to qualify for the grant you must complete the following requirements: meet with the TRIO counselor, have an updated TRIO file, have a current and correct FAFSA on file, a GPA of 2.0 or higher, a current Educational Study Plan, attend 1 Technical Workshop, attend 1 Transfer Workshop, attend 1 cultural event or campus visit and be a Pell Grant recipient. In addition an “Intent to Qualify” card must be completed and submitted to the TRIO office.

Top

What is an Intent to Qualify card and where do I get one?
An Intent to Qualify card is an index card that you must complete with your name, telephone number and social security number. Once you complete it, you must have a TRIO staff member sign it in. This tells us you are interested in applying for the grant and gives us permission to verify you have met all of the requirements. You can pick up a card at the TRIO office.

Top

Why does a TRIO staff member have to sign the card in?
Because we are operating on a first-come-first-serve basis, we have to keep an accurate record of when the card was submitted. Remember we have a limit on how much money we will be awarding, so the sooner you submit your Intent to Qualify card the better your chances are of receiving the grant, providing you meet all of the requirements.

Top

What if I can not wait for the card to be signed in and just leave it with staff?
As long as TRIO staff receives the card it will get signed in, but by just leaving it and not waiting until it is signed in, you take the chance of TRIO staff not signing it in until sometime later or the next day, this could decrease your chances of being one of the first to qualify.

Top

What if I miss just one requirement, can I still receive the grant?
No. You must meet all of the Honor Grant requirements in order to qualify-there are no exceptions.

Top

What if I do all the activities but forget to complete the Intent to Qualify card?
You will not qualify for the grant. All steps must be completed including the Intent to Qualify card.

Top

I met with my counselor to get my schedule, does this count for the Counselor meeting?
No. This particular meeting involves completing and/or updating your Educational Study Plan, as well as completing an assessment on how your semester is progressing. In fact these counselor meetings will not be taking place until after the fall and spring TRIO Orientations have been held, usually 2 to 3 weeks after the semester has started.

Top

How will I know if I will receive the grant?
Students will be mailed a letter within two weeks after the deadline informing them if they will or will not receive the grant.

Top

When is the deadline to complete all of the requirements?
Because each semester’s deadline is different, you need to look on the Calendar of Events on our webpage.

Top

How many times can I receive the grant?
You can receive the grant once a year, either in the Fall or Spring semester.

Top

Will I have to meet the requirements over again if I don't receive the grant in the Fall?
You can not count the same requirements for both semesters. You will have to complete them all over again in the Spring.

Top

What if I don’t qualify for the fall semester, does this mean I will not qualify for the Spring semester too?
It depends on why you did not qualify. If it is because you missed an event or forgot to submit an Intent to Qualify card, then yes you could possibly qualify for the spring should you complete all of the requirements. But if your GPA is below 2.0 or you do not have an “Unmet Need” then you may not qualify. Because every student’s situation is different, your best bet is to see the TRIO counselor to get a more definite answer.

Top

What is a technical and transfer workshop?
A transfer workshop is just that, a workshop that provides information on the transferring process. Topics such as how to best fill out the transfer application, deadlines, transfer days, personal essays are all topics of discussion. Technical workshops are workshops such as Time Management, Stress Management, Career and Scholarship Research.

Top

Do I have to pay for my expenses if I attend a campus visit?
TRIO will provide transportation and lunch whenever we go on a campus visit.
