Step 5 Counseling

Counseling

The college counseling staff provides assistance to each student in planning an academic program of studies for graduation, for transfer or for personal interest. The rapid changes in requirements and prerequisites for institutions and careers make continuing guidance a necessary part of students’ academic lives. All students are encouraged to define educational objectives and plan how to achieve them. Matriculating students must have selected an informed educational goal during the semester after which they complete their first 15 units of course work. Make an appointment to work on your student educational plan (SEP) today.

Counselors can also provide students with special counseling and guidance in matters pertaining to adjustment to college, help in improving study skills and career planning. Go to the Counseling page for more details.

You can contact a counselor, via our online counseling e-mail form or by telephone (760 384-6219). Counselors/counseling technicians are available for assistance before and during each semester on a drop-in or appointment basis. Please check with the local Cerro Coso office staff for counseling appointment availability.

Transfer Center

The Transfer Center is available to assist students in making their transition to a four-year college/university a successful one. Among the many services available to students are CSU/UC application workshops, on-campus visits by university representatives, visits to university campuses, articulation information, and agreements with colleges/universities, as well as information on the California Articulation Numbering System (CAN). At the Centers, this information can be acquired from the counselor/counselor technician. For more Information go to the Transfer Center page.

Testing/Assessment Services

Cerro Coso provides testing and assessment services to students for the purpose of evaluating academic potential, determining career/occupation interests, and measuring general or specific aptitudes. A College Placement Test Battery is administered to incoming students and the scores are used to assist students in appropriate course selection and to determine if minimum proficiencies in writing, reading and mathematics have been met.

Students may be referred for individual or group testing by counselors, instructors or other qualified staff, agencies or individuals. College counselors will assist students in the interpretation and application of their test scores.

Cerro Coso Community College serves as an official test center for the following: the tests of General Educational Development (GED), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), the National Teachers Examination (NTE) and the University of California (Berkeley) correspondence course examinations.

Additional information for specific tests and examination procedures is available in the Learning Assistance Center at the IWV campus or from the counselor/counselor technician at the Centers.

Career Planning/Placement Services

Career Planning/Placement Services assist individuals in making career decisions. These services, located in the Student Services Center, are open to all students and visitors from the community and include computerized career information and search programs, a career information library, occupational interest inventories, individual counseling and classes in career planning. Job
placement and advisory services are provided to students, graduates and former students for off-campus part-time, full-time, temporary, permanent or summer employment opportunities. Materials relating to job seeking skills, interview and resume writing techniques, and current employment opportunities outside the Indian Wells Valley are also available.

At the Eastern Sierra Center location in Bishop, the Career Planning Center offers similar services. Additional services include periodic information programs and test administration services for CLEP examinations on a year-round basis. The Center's staff will also be able to assist you with information concerning the many financial aid programs available to Cerro Coso students.

The Career Resource Center also affiliated with the Northern Extension office gives the College Placement Test, offers computerized career information programs, and provides college catalogs for California in hardcover and the Western States on microfiche.

Please contact the staff at your extension office to determine the availability of career counseling activities available to you.

Honors Program

The Cerro Coso Community College Honors Program was designed to provide an academically challenging experience for students desiring to develop extended knowledge in a particular subject area(s) and develop enhanced analytical and critical thinking skills. The program provides an opportunity for students to work closely with faculty in small groups and to design and develop an independent honors project. For more information contact the Honors Program counselor in the Student Services Center at the IWV campus. For more information go to the Honors Program page.

Distance Learning

Cerro Coso Community College offers learning experiences via telecourses and on-line Internet based courses to students who find it difficult to travel to a College campus or Center and who can demonstrate that they can benefit from this type of instruction/learning. Through these instructional modes, students can work at home and view the programs associated with telecourses, read the text and review the study guide in order to complete class assignments. All telecourses are supported by additional on-line services so that students can fully benefit from interaction with other students and with the instructor. In addition, students may take one or more Cerro Coso Community College courses on-line via the Internet.

Cerro Coso Community College is one of eight community colleges in the country in association with the International Community College offering an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts/General Studies on-line. For more information go to the Cerro Coso Online page.

Student Housing

No student housing facilities are currently available at any of the Cerro Coso Community College campuses. A listing of possible living accommodations for students in the nearby communities may be obtained in the Student Services Center. The college, however, assumes no legal responsibility for providing or supervising off-campus housing facilities for students.

Student Insurance

Broad coverage student health and accident insurance is not carried by the college or the Kern Community College District. Students who desire individual protection may make arrangements to be included in a student group insurance policy. More information and applications are available in the Student Services Center at the IWV campus or from the counselor/counselor technician at the Centers.

Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities

The principle of personal honor is the basis for student conduct. The honor system rests on the sincere belief that the college student is mature and self-respecting and can be relied upon to act as a responsible and ethical member of society. Each student is obligated to observe the College Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, both on campus and at college-sponsored events away from campus.

The California Education Code (Section 66300) requires that each public institution of higher education adopt specific rules and regulations governing student behavior. Such a document has been prepared and is made available to all students at the time of registration, in the Student Handbook, or may be obtained from the Student Services Center. Included in this document are the standards of student conduct, applicable penalties for violations and the guarantees of due process in any disciplinary proceedings. All matters pertaining to student conduct should be referred to the Vice President, Student Services.

Student Grievance

Students with a grievance concerning academic programs should contact the Student Services Center at the IWV campus or the counselor/counselor technician at the Centers concerning student rights and responsibilities and policies and procedures relating to due process.
