Coyotes in the Classroom a Success
March 15, 2011
The 2011 Cerro Coso Coyote baseball program has kicked off "Coyotes in the Classroom" as its first community mentoring program. This spring the Cerro Coso baseball team has joined with Gateway Elementary School to provide a mentoring program for the kids. All 24 players are actively participating in meeting with the children and helping them in the classroom.
The program kicked off on March 4th, as the Coyotes helped Principal Lisa Decker orchestrate the annual Junior Olympics at Gateway Elementary. Players helped record events, instruct the children, and also be motivational support. One week later, the baseball team had an opportunity to sit in with the second grade classes and work with them on subjects such as math, reading, and spelling.
"Coyotes in the classroom was an idea presented to me by my Assistant Bryan King. It is a program that he had been a part of in the past and had seen a lot of positive results from. It is wonderful for the elementary school kids to have our players be involved. They serve as role models, and can make a big impact if they choose to do so. It is also great for our players. It is something that is new for them, and it allows them to see what kind of positive influence they can be in the community. I hope this is just the start of something special in the Ridgecrest Community for years to come." - Coach Montgomery
