Learn a Foreign Language at CCCC this Spring
December 8, 2010
There are many reasons for learning a Foreign Language and Cerro Coso Community College has a variety to choose from this spring.
Learning a Foreign language can lead to a better understanding of others, their cultures, values, and traditions. A Princeton University study shows that competency in a foreign language is one of the five top skills needed in today's job market. Cerro Coso is offering a variety of courses in Latin, Russian, Spanish, and French to choose from this spring. Instructor, Charles Humphreys, will instruct Latin C001, C101, C102, C201, and C202 on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:45 to 7:50 p.m. LATN C001 is designed for those who wish to deepen and intensify their pursuit of special areas of study within the Latin language. Topics are chosen based upon student interest and could include the study of prose literature, culture, history, advanced grammar or other similar topics. This course does not fulfill core or elective requirements for certificates or degrees in languages. LATN C101 will cover the basic structures and vocabulary for understanding reading, writing, and speaking Latin. Drills will be given in pronunciation, comprehension and structure of the language. LATN C102 and LATN C201 continue advanced work in the Latin language. LATN C202 will conduct a detailed and intensive reading of books I, II, IV, and VI of the Aeneid.
Humphreys also teaches Russian at Cerro Coso. Russian classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:45 and 8:50 p.m. RUSS C101 is an introductory course.& Students will learn basic grammar and vocabulary for speaking, reading, understanding, and writing at the beginning level as well as learn about the culture and civilization of the Russian speaking world. Further advanced studies in the Russian language are covered in RUSS C102, C201, and C202.
In SPAN C171 instructor, Lucila Gonzalez-Cirre, will assist students in improving their ability to communicate in Spanish through vocabulary building, reading, and classroom conversation at a mid to high-intermediate level. Through an interactive classroom approach students have the opportunity to enhance their oral proficiency as they apply the language to a variety of situations. The College is also offering a course in the study of Hispanic civilization and culture through films, videos and documentaries as well as varied readings. In SPAN C211 students will analyze, discuss, and write critiques of selected films from Spain and Latin America and the United States. The class covers a variety of cultural issues such as the art, music, history, and politics of the Hispanic world. There will be an emphasis on issues of multiculturalism and diversity as illustrated by the films and readings such as race, class, and gender issues. Cerro Coso is offering a number of Elementary Spanish classes on-line.
