Cerro Coso to Offer More On Campus Classes this Spring
November 4, 2010
Now that the California state budget has been approved by the legislature, Cerro Coso Community College announced today their plans to increase on campus sections of high demand classes to meet local student needs at all campuses. Cerro Coso serves more than 8,500 students in its 18,000 square mile service areas.
Even without a state budget enrollment was up at Cerro Coso this fall. Class sections were strategically cut and/or combined to maximize instruction and meet student needs while managing with fewer funds. This resulted in fewer sections of core courses available to students. The College plans to minimize that happening this spring by offering more on campus classes in high demand. "Our District's reserves have done a good job of protecting us from the longest budget impasse in California history. Cerro Coso remains focused on responding to the immediate needs of the students in our service areas with customized educational classes and programs to meet their needs," stated, Cerro Coso President, Jill Board.
Cerro Coso Community College is one of three colleges of the Kern Community College District (KCCD). The state allocation is received by KCCD. The District used its healthy reserves to keep all three colleges going while awaiting an approved state budget. In September KCCD predicted that the lack of an approved State budget deferred approximately $5.5 million per month of cash flow to the District.
Cerro Coso's spring semester will begin January 17, 2010. The spring class schedule will be available via the web at www.cerrocoso.edu the second week of November.
