Certified Nursing Assistant Training is now available locally! The Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) is a new course for the Bishop Campus. The Cerro Coso Community College, Eastern Sierra College Center, Bishop Campus is offering the 5 unit course beginning on October 5 through December 9. “This class is being offered in response to the communities requesting this course and in for the preparation of the Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) class that is scheduled to start in January 2008,” stated Cheryl Gates, Director of Vocational Nursing and Allied Health Careers at Cerro Coso Community College.

This course (HCRS CO55) develops the skills necessary to pass the State mandated test to become a Certified Nurses Aide. Topics include legal and ethical responsibilities, bedside care, moving and positioning resident, general observations of a resident’s condition and responsibilities related to care of the elderly patient. Practical bedside skills are practiced by the student in the nursing skills lab. The student gains experience in a long term care facility. Yvette Matthiessen is the instructor for the Certified Nurses Aide course.

The class will be held at the Bishop Campus in the “new” nursing skills lab. The clinical experience component will be offered at Bishop Care Center. This class provides the CNA certificate which is a prerequisite for the LVN program coming in January to the Eastern Sierra College Center.
