eBooks... Learn it!

What are eBooks?

eBooks are electronic versions of print books. Like print books, the text found in eBooks is often enriched with photos, illustrations, graphs and tables. In eBooks, users can navigate through the text (e.g. easily search for specific passages) in ways not possible in print.

What is netLibrary and the Cerro Coso Community College eBook Collection?

The Cerro Coso Community College has purchased approximately 13,000 electronic books (eBooks) from netLibrary. Cerro Coso Community College in concert with netLibrary, makes it possible for you to access a wide range of research, reference and reading materials online. The Cerro Coso Community College eBook Collection was purchased to meet the needs of our library's users. In addition, when you search the collection, you'll note an option for publicly accessible eBooks — classic works of literature and history.

Accessing the eBook Collection

First, think about how you wish to use eBooks. If you only wish to search and browse the list of  eBooks, you will not need to create an account. In this case, skip to “Searching for an eBook” for more information.

Apply for an eBook account

Establishing an account allows you to check out an eBook when you access it remotely, but you should first apply for the account.

  1. Click on Apply for an eBook account.
  2. Enter your identifying information (name, phone number, email address, ID [College generated ID] and college status).
  3. Select the Submit button.

Your passwords will be sent to you by email within 24 hours during the regular work week. You will have access to the online eBooks immediately upon receiving the user name and password.

Logging in

Each time you wish to check out an eBook when you access it remotely, you must first log in. (You must apply for an eBook account first through the Cerro Coso Community College Library's web page).
How to log in:

  1. Go to "FIND: Books - CC Library Catalog" on the CCCC Library web page. Search for the subject that you want by using the Subject Keyword. (You may also go directly to the full listing of the Cerro Coso eBook Collection by doing an "Author Keyword" search using the search term "netLibrary".  This is NOT the best way to find your subject.)
  2. The search will bring up a list of books.  The eBooks are the ones with "electronic resource" as part of the title.  After selecting your choice of the titles by clicking on the hyperlink, scroll down to the "Web Location" link that will take you directly to the ebook in the netLibrary.
  3. Select the Log In link when the netLibrary page opens at the top left side of the page.
  4. At the log in page, put the user name and password in the boxes.
  5. Click on the "View this eBook" link in the eBook Details box.
  6. You now have access to all eBooks available in Cerro Coso Community College Library's collection.

Searching for an eBook

Start your search in one of two places:

A keyword search allows you to search for a word or phrase in the title, author, Library of Congress subject heading, series, name, general and ISBN fields. To perform a keyword search, enter the search term.

To perform a more expanded search, fill in any or all of the fields. To do a phrase search, submit your search in quotes – for example, “small business.” Select the red Go button to display search results.

You have the option to select the "Add to my list" box in the lower right hand corner. This feature allows you to add titles to a list so you can easily access them at a later time without executing another search.

Browsing an eBook

You may browse an eBook without logging in. Browsing an eBook is the equivalent of taking a book off the shelf and looking through it. While you are actively using it, no other user will have access to it. After looking at the eBook, be sure that you log out.  Otherwise, the book will be charged to your account as an overdue book.

How to browse an eBook:

  1. Search for an eBook.
  2. Select the eBook title from your search results to display the Item Information page.
  3. Select the Web Location link.
  4. The eBook is displayed. To learn how to use an eBook, select the Help tab at the top of your screen.
  5. After looking at the eBook, be sure that you log out.  Otherwise, the book will be charged to your account as an overdue book.

Must I be connected to the Internet to access netLibrary's titles?

Yes. To view, browse, and check out your library's eBook collection, you must begin online. After you have created an eBook account through our library, you may choose to download an eBook for offline viewing using the free netLibrary eBook Reader™ Software.

Can I print an eBook?

You can print single pages of an eBook, much like you can print a single page of a print book on a photocopy machine. Sections of pages, within limitations, can also be copied and pasted into reports and presentations.

Who do I contact if I need more information?

Staff at Cerro Coso Community College Library can help you set up a netLibrary account and answer your questions about using eBooks. Need help over the telephone? Call Cerro Coso Community College Library at 760-384-6131.
