Learning Assistance Center (LAC)
The Learning Assistance Center, located on the second floor, room 704, of the Learning Resource Center building at the Indian Wells Valley campus, provides a variety of support services for students enrolled in academic and vocational courses. The campuses at KRV and ESCC campuses at Bishop and Mammoth also have LAC's with Tutoring and GED Preparation for students.
Exam Proctoring is available for both Cerro Coso courses and other institutions' courses. Proctored exams are required for select online courses. Proctoring is available free of charge at any Cerro Coso Community College campus for our distance learning courses.
Tutoring is available from trained tutors for almost every subject offered by the college. Students may enroll in this one-half unit course and work with tutors hired, trained, and supervised by faculty. Students may come with or without an appointment (though appointments are preferred) to work with a tutor, usually in small peer groups. Students should bring their assignments, homework, or questions, and we'll provide the tools needed to excel. Students should sign up for a tutor early in the semester for the best chance of success!
Student Success Labs
Success Labs provide software for reading text materials and for organizing and proofreading papers. Additional subject area practice is available. Lab Aides and Faculty are available to assist students. Students may bring their own headsets and flash drives for use in the lab.
The lab is equipped with Read & Write Gold, specific software for GED practice, Inspiration software for organizing papers from English to science lab reports and more. Adaptive equipment such as a Smart View enlarger, Kurzweil 3000 Scan and Read are housed in the LAC.
Computer Labs may be used by registered Cerro Coso students for course work, printing papers, emailing, research, and online class work. Computers are equipped for study and for course work in computer, business, and graphic design classes. Lab Aides/Tutors are on duty most hours. Printing cost is per page and students may purchase pages in advance through the Business Office.
Supplemental instruction is provided for select courses with high academic and time demands on students. A trained peer serves as a supplemental instructor by working with the instructor, participating in the course and providing study group sessions.
Supervised Tutoring & Tutor Training
Supervised tutoring provides free study skill surveys and free tutoring by trained peer tutors several hours a week by appointment. Students may ask instructors or counselors for a referral. Also students may complete a skills survey in the LAC or online. Once the survey is completed and reviewed by LAC faculty, students will be directed to register for INST C004 - Supervised Tutoring.
Tutor Training (EDUC 170) for 0.5 units permits instructor referred peer tutors to become internationally certified through the College Reading and Learning Association.
