Course Description: Is your picture book manuscript a diamond in the rough, just waiting for
you to polish it into a sparkling jewel? Have you written a story for young
children and you aren’t quite sure if it’s on the right track? This Cerro
Coso College Community Education class will give you the chance to analyze
your picture book story from the general (What is the theme?) to the
specific (Does my main character have enough voice?). The class covers the
key elements of writing a successful picture book and how to apply them to
your story; openings, middles, endings, characters, point of view, dialogue,
language, creating a dummy book, and how to submit to a publisher.
Students should be prepared to roll up their sleeves and get busy. Bring to
class: three copies of your manuscript, six different colored highlight
markers, scissors, and removable tape.
Instructor Terry L. Pierce is a published children’s author in books and
magazines. Her published books include: Two tales of Hawaii, Greatest
Goofiest Jokes, Goofiest Knock-Knocks, and Hawaii A-Z Coloring Book Series.
Upcoming books that are currently under contract include: Pet Jokes that
will Make You Howl!, TAE KWON DO!, and The Bone Hunter. Terry is also the
Assistant Kern County Coordinator for the Society of Children’s Book Writers
& Illustrators.
