San Juan River Expedition

Biox 800: Natural History of the San Juan River

April 20-25, 2003

Community Education Class, 0 credit, 0 units, 0 fees other than trip cost

This is a river rafting trip from Bluff, UT to Lake Powell; Cost is $1020 per student and includes dinner Sunday night in Bluff, motel room at the Desert Rose Inn Sunday and Friday nights, (before and after the trip), all meals while on the river, guides, and river equipment for 5 day trip on the San Juan River. You provide your own camping gear and clothes. A list will be provided.

The San Juan is an “easy” river trip, with a few Class I and II rapids to splash you once in a while. Nothing BIG- just a lot of fun. There are many archeology sites- Anasazi ruins and petroglyph panels, which can be reached only by river; many side canyons and grottoes to explore, and 2+ days traversing the famous “Goosenecks of the San Juan”. This is “red rock country” at its finest! 86 river miles from Bluff to Lake Powell. We take out at Clay Hills and are transported back to Bluff, UT stopping by the “Goosenecks Overlook” so you can get an aerial photo!

Registration:

This will be run as a “Community Ed” class - ie. 0 credit, 0 unit course. You don’t have to sign up through Cerro Coso’s regular process - all you need to do is get the proper registration form from the Office of Instruction - see Lia, and that’s it. No college fees, no transcripts, no muss, no fuss!! OR you can get the registration form at: www.cerrocoso.edu/communityed/

Deposit of $250 needed upon registration, $770 by March 14. Space is limited to 20 folk!! Use Visa or MC cards even! SIGN UP NOW!!

Itinerary:

Easter Sunday, April 20

If you wish, join me in Flagstaff at 8 a.m. and we’ll caravan north through Sunset Crater and Wupatki Nat’l Monuments, to Tuba City and the Navajo Reservation, Kayenta, and a stop at Monument Valley Tribal Park on our way to Mexican Hat and Bluff, UT. Hwys 89, 160, 163. Checkin at Desert Rose.

**Required: Dinner 6 p.m. Sunday night (included in your fare) at Wild Rivers, where we will dine in the “hogan” and meet our river guides, get river bags & ammo cans for our gear, and answer all final questions about the trip. Desert Rose Inn.

Monday April 21

Sand Island launch ramp. There’s a large petroglyph panel there we can visit while the boats are being readied. Tie on gear and hop aboard!! Several neat sites today including very famous Butler Wash petroglyph panel and River House, an 800 year old cliff dwelling.

Tuesday provides hiking opportunities and hunting for the many fossils which are in these layers. We’ll pass Mexican Hat around noon on Wednesday, then enter the Goosenecks of the San Juan for the remainder of the trip to Clay Hills, which we reach mid-afternoon on Friday. Where we camp is up to our guides, the river, the weather, and river traffic. We will always have a fine, sandy beach somewhere. They provide all the kitchen stuff and food and even cook it!! River companies pride themselves in fine cuisine for all meals! Porta potty facilities are required and will have a lovely river view somewhere beyond camp. Lunches will be on a shady beach somewhere.

Your only job is to set up your sleeping stuff and manage your river bag. If you choose a tent, be sure it’s a free-standing one that does NOT need pegs to stay up - all the camping places are in deep sand....... Shade is usually available under tamarisk or cottonwood trees....

Friday April 25

We return to the Desert Rose Inn late afternoon. Clean up, then suggest dinner (on your own) at the Twin Rock Cafe, other end of town. We reverse everything Sat and Sun getting back to Ridgecrest...
