    University of California, Irvine = Civil Litigation I (Section 1) Course Number: SOC SCI X473.1 Credit 3 units Obtain a thorough understanding of the law and procedures involved in filing a civil action through the default phase. The course will cover pre-lawsuit issues which will include case assessment, client interviews, demand letters, jurisdiction, and statute of limitations. Understand the practical aspects of preparing and filing complaints, answers, various motions, and defaults. Gain a working knowledge of calendar time limits with regard to the practice of civil procedure.
    University of California, San Diego = Civil Litigation I Course Number: LAW-40018 Credit: 3 units Receive a thorough overview of the civil litigation process. The first of a two course series, instruction will cover the procedures for preparing a case for trial, from pre-lawsuit investigation through trial. The focus is on procedures within state courts with some discussion of federal court procedure also. The course describes the paralegal's function during the litigation process and ways in which paralegals can expand their level of responsibility.

The course follows a hypothetical civil dispute, based upon the laws of contracts and torts, from its inception through trial.   19. OUT OF CLASS ASSIGNMENTS:  Out of class assignments may include but are not limited to

    A. Reading: Read from text and assigned case law to understand a court action. B. Research: Locate and evaluate assigned court cases for understanding of legal case. C. Homework. 1. Student will view mock cases that are assigned with a mock court scheduled for immediate action. i. Select proper forms for legal process and fill in with mock client's information. ii. File court form with mock court. iii. Examine response from court and complete proper form modification as necessary.
  20. METHODS OF EVALUATION: Assessment of student performance may include but is not limited to

    Class discussion participation and activities evaluating mock client information, client action evaluated, and proper form processing for court submission, review of mock returned court forms to identify corrections for resubmission.

    Case analysis – The student will evaluate hypothetical cases identifying the forms, information necessary for the form, and proper filing time lines identified for a court action.
